10 Things Jesus Did for Me: #1 Cleansing

Has the gospel amazed you yet today?

One of the reasons we fail to be astonished anew each day is that the gospel gets flattened, shrunk into easily digestible dimensions – and we lose sight of the sheer glory and magnificence of what God has accomplished for us in Christ Jesus.

So here is another, Biblical reminder of what Jesus has done for you – to receive deep into your soul by faith and for your joy!

The bad news is that our sin has blackened our souls.  Our violations of God’s character and holy law have rendered us spiritually filthy – unclean before divine holiness, unworthy of divine favor, unwelcome at the heavenly banquet feast.  And we can’t clean ourselves up.

Jeremiah 13:23 (ESV):

Can the Ethiopian change his skin
              or the leopard his spots?

No, it’s not possible.  Sin defiles us before the eyes of God– and we cannot wash away the stain.  That’s the very, very bad news.

The incredibly good news is that we can be thoroughly, forever, washed clean!

This was the good news as Saul first heard it: from the lips of wise old Ananias to his filthy, squalid heart:

“And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.” Acts 22:16 (ESV)

This “good news” became Paul’s testimony in the midst of a grimy world.

“He saved us,… the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit," Titus 3:5 (ESV)

The Apostle John assures his readers, as they face the dirt of their sin:

1 John 1:7 “If we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Do you sense the grime of your sinful thoughts and words and deeds?   Does the muck of your guilt seem to cling to you?  O friend!  The death of Jesus has washed away all your stain!    Receive it and rejoice - “You were washed!” (1 Cor 6:11).

Stay tuned for #2 in the series "10 Things Jesus Did for Me."
