A New Adventure

Today is the day I step, with trepidation, into the world of blogging.

There have been several compelling reasons, to date, which have made me hesitant to begin this journey:

  1. The Scriptural caution: "when words are many sin is not absent"  (Proverbs 10:19).
  2. "Of the writing of blogs, there is no end" (Eccl 12:12 Dale's Revised Version). There are already a gazillion blogs in existence, and many of them are a very worthwhile read.
  3. "Do not worry about tomorrow...sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof" (Matthew 6:34).  I have talked to enough folks to know that blogging quickly becomes a burden; the pressure to continually come up with something worthwhile for the next post can be intense.  I really don't need more pressure at this moment.  Trying to write two fairly coherent sermons each week has provided sufficient outlet for my editorial energies.

So what am I doing beginning a blog?

Well, a wise man once said, "a word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver" (Prov 25:11).  While Scripture warns against idle chatter, it encourages uplifting words (Ephesians 4:29), instructing words (Proverbs 19:20), and comforting words (2 Corinthians 1:4).  So that will be my intent in this blog - to write words which bless in God-honoring ways.

You see, while there are many blogs, there aren't any blogs written from the pastor of Harvest to the flock of Harvest.  That's what I would like this blog to be.  This will not be written for the world at large, or even the church at large, but for the life and health of Harvest OPC in Wyoming, Michigan.  Anyone, of course, is invited to “listen in,” but the intended audience is the ears and hearts and minds of my brothers and sisters at Harvest.

How will I find the time?  Well, I expect to write short posts a few times a week as I carry out my normal ministry.  I often read things that inspire or encourage me and I think "I should share this with Harvest folks."  So all I'm adding is the few minutes to type it out.  I think I can do that.

The general theme of this blog will be Christ-centered and gospel focused.  There is a whole range of issues that are worthy of discussion but I would like to focus particularly on the person and work of Jesus for us so we are growing in a gospel-consciousness that transforms us.  With this in mind I intend to share quotes from books I'm currently reading, reflections on a conference or class I'm taking, links to articles or blogs that I think you'll appreciate; in short, things I'm learning about Jesus and the gospel.   My goal is simply this: to help us treasure Jesus and grow in ministry together.

So here's to a new adventure.

"May the words of my mouth .... be pleasing in your sight, O Lord." (Psalm 19:14)
